Security Levels
Founded in 1989, Exeter Architectural Products pioneered the use of perforated metal as a barrier product for commercial properties and government buildings, first as a security screen and then expanded into storm screens and hurricane shutters. The Exeter team is comprised of experienced professionals who live and work in hurricane-affected areas, which is why we treat each project as if it is our own home or business.

Electronic Espionage Protection – EMI / RFI Shield Ratings
Exeter security screens protect from more than just intruders. Our advanced screens offer an Electronic Espionage Protection (EMI / RFI) Shield Rating. Due to the use of high-quality perforated metal, the same material used in microwave oven doors, and other electronic enclosures, Window Barriers offer a proven method for shielding Electro-Magnetic and Radio Frequency Interference (EMI/RFI). A significant benefit of this inherent feature is preventing the passage of unwanted electronic waves and radio waves commonly used by hi-tech eavesdropping systems.
Exeter’s foundational product, Security Barriers, was the first product in the industry to incorporate the use of heavy-duty perforated metal combined with specially designed reinforced extruded aluminum framing, hinges, and quick release locking mechanisms. In 1992, Exeter’s patented design was awarded a silver medal by the Industrial Design Society of America and Business Week magazine for being one of “The Best New Products In America.” The strong “see through” barrier with emergency egress capabilities became the product of choice among government buildings, hospitals, colleges, universities, inner-city schools, and housing authorities.
Highest Blast Protection Rating
Exeter security screens are engineered to provide the highest blast protection rating. Although Exeter Window Barriers were originally intended to provide perimeter security through an application on the exterior of a building’s window system, government agencies and first responders recognize the lifesaving and property saving value of 24/7 protection from flying glass and debris when mounted to the interior of a structure during detonation of a bomb outside. The unique see-thru perforated metal design offers building occupants the freedom of mind to go about life as usual.
Exeter window barriers are a viable option for protection from flying glass and debris when mounted to a structure’s interior. Independent laboratory bomb blast tests performed in the wake of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 have proven that when installed on a window’s interior, Exeter window barriers reduce potentially lethal flying glass to mere shards and dust, thus increasing the odds of surviving such an event.
The world is ever changing. Security has become part of our culture. From terrorism bomb blast to weapon and drug “pass thru” protection, no one scores higher than Exeter Window Barriers.
Now more than ever the word security has taken on a whole new definition. Force protection plans need critical updating. Exeter developed a product that not only resists the awesome strength of nature, but serves as a gauntlet to the criminal element. Governmental agencies recognize the value of protecting not only property but far more valuable…life itself. This is a comprehensive 24/7 solution to making window entry no longer an option. From essential facility force protection, to the estates of dignitaries and government officials, this is the first step in any anti-terrorism plan.
Mount | Face | P (psi) | I (psi-ms) | Hazard Level | Result |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Inset | Exterior | 4.3 | 33 | 5 | Screen intact |
Inset | Interior | 4.3 | 33 | 3B | Heavy dusting, screen intact |
Inset | Interior | 4.5 | 39.5 | 3B | Heavy dusting, screen intact |
Inset | Exterior | 6.0 | 60 | 5 | Screen intact |
External | Interior | 6.0 | 51 | 3B | Screen intact |
Conclusions:
– Screen on interior face of window effective in preventing large glass fragments but does allow heavy dusting. Film would prevent this from occurring.
– Maximum capacity P=6 psi, I=51 psi-ms.
– Existing design exceeds GSA Category C blast load and hazard level requirement
– With attachment modifications, may reach GSA category D P=10 psi, I=88 psi-ms.
